Gabriel Ayala-Classical Guitarist

Gabriel Ayala, classical guitarist, was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. Upon graduation from High School in 1991, he enrolled at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and studied under the direction of Philip Hii. In 1993, Gabriel won an Honors Concert Competition with his performance of the 2nd and 3rd movements of the Villa-Lobos Concerto.

After three years of studying at Del Mar, Gabriel was offered an Adjunct Faculty position while obtaining his Bachelor of Music degree at Texas A & M University. Immediately following, Gabriel was awarded a Graduate Fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson. In 1997, he attained his Master's of Music degree that focused on Music Performance and was honored by being one of the twenty-two competitors chosen to compete in the Stotsenberg International Guitar Competition in Malibu, California. Gabriel has performed throughout the United States and has had the opportunity to perform on live radio broadcasts as well as public television. Gabriel was nominated for the 2003 Native American Music Award for "Best Independent Recording". In addition to being a solo classical guitarist, Gabriel also promotes Native culture through traditional singing and dancing. Gabriel has also taken master classes with many of today's leading classical guitarists including Manuel Barrueco, Roberto Aussel, David Leisner, Angel and Pepe Romero, Paul O'dette and many others. Gabriel (Yaqui) currently resides in Tucson, AZ and is working on the production of a new CD to be released sometime in 2004.
